Cover Image
This is the image I will use for the cover page as it is easy to layout and it creates a connection as the model is looking directly at the audience.

NOTE THIS IS WORK IN PROGRESS

Headline: DPS1-We Tried to go through this together | DPS2-To be honest I just want my music to be heard”
Sub heading: DPS1 – Adam reveals bands strong bond
Main Body:

Column 1
We caught up with Adam Tried before his concert at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to talk about his debut solo album being leaked on to the internet. Adam is the lead singer and guitarist of the band Kamikaze who have been on hiatus since August last year. His debut album “Adam tried to make an album” was recently leaked and has been downloaded a million times at the time of writing this article. The album reveals collaborations with other artists such as Jonah Wei-Haas (Pianist for Pinn Panelle) and Dylan Cloud (The bassist for Jezebel Lies).

“Dorian is doing great. He is currently in talks with a movie director for a film coming out in 2016.He had cameos in movies here and there but this will be his big debut for his film career. JR is doing charity work in the Philippines helping Typhoon Haiyan survivors rebuild their homes. Aiden is not doing so great. Currently he is having some problems so we are helping and talking to him about how supportive we are and how much it meant for us to do something positive. We are trying to get through this together”, Adam said to Unplugged. “We’re lucky to have a band of friends who have their heads screwed on – our life experiences, both good and bad, go into that and we support each other. We all love what we do. We are not letting Aiden’s problems affect our friendship and future,”

“Since we shot up in popularity in about 2008, we never thought we would be on magazines and on TV. We knew each other from college and decided to start a band. We uploaded songs onto my youtube channel and shared it on Facebook and we blew up from there.”

Column 2

When asked about his opinion on his debut solo album being leaked he said, “To be honest I just want my music to be heard, it doesn’t matter how.” He also added, “I wanted to show my roots in how I got into the music industry so I uploaded an unfinished version of the album with faked track listings. It’s to build up hype for the official release and to give them a preview. The reason why I chose to leak it is to show my music to a wider audience”

He goes on saying about how piracy can help the music industry, “It allows newer artists to reach a wider audience. It’s the main way to distribute their music apart from YouTube and SoundCloud. Sure there are a drop in sales of physical copies but the revenue from digital sales, gigs and merchandise make up for it.”

Music used in the presentation

Evaluation
The presentation was able to show the purpose of the magazine and aesthetic. The type of genre the magazine focuses on was presented clearly with audio embedded into the presentation. During the presentation, I had the audience vote on what font the mast head should be. The majority voted for Rockwell Extra Bold as it stands out and can be easily read. In terms of the color scheme, they agreed with the color choices as they believe it suits the genre and there is a contrast between the colours.

Magazine Distribution

ELECTRONIC BRAND EXTENSION

This is when magazines increase their online presence using social media such as:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Youtube
This allows them to spread news through different mediums and allows readers to follow them to get the latest news. They may also extend into radio, gigs and other events. An example of a magazine that does this is Kerrang.

EZINES

They are online versions of the printed magazines with similar features such as turnable pages, adverts and page numbers. They are available through a subscription or through a website. They are usually free and have electronic features such as hyperlinks to other sources and embedded videos. RWD is an example of an online magazine.

FREEMIUMS

Freemiums are magazines that are given out for free in public places such as train stations. Since they are free, publishers make revenue through adverts. An example of a freemium magazine is ShortList.

SALES/RETURN

This is a method of distribution that the publisher uses for distributing printed magazines. Any of the copies that are not sold are returned to the distributor at no cost. There are no risks for shops that do this as they do not lose money when magazines do not sell.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

Regular readers of magazines may wish to subscribe to a number of issues and have the magazine regularly posted to them or onto an online reader for a heavily discounted price. It is easier for the audience and ensures that the magazine is read. Electronic distribution is similar except that the magazine will be sent to the readers electronic device that is able to read the magazine.

Newsstand Task

WHSmiths organize their magazines by genre. each genre has it's own dedicated shelf. On the picture on the left, on the second row there are 3 magazines where the cover line is across the page. The magazines are not layered over each other so that the cover line can be seen. On the same picture on the left and on the third row, the magazines are layered over each other. The teasers are also on the left side of the cover page. Monthly magazines such as MOJO are on the top half of the shelves whereas weekly magazines such as Kerrang are at the bottom.

All of the magazines tend to have the masthead on top of the page behind the model with MOJO being the one exception. On most of the magazines on the shelf, the mast head is white to make it stand out from the background and is the first thing you see on the cover part from the model. On magazines such as Oasis and Rock Sound, they do the opposite having a white background and a colored mast head.

All of the magazines have the models looking directly at the audience to create a connection with possible readers. another way magazines draw peoples attention is the use of incentives such a ad free giveaways. For example Rock Sound has a Music CD attached to the front cover. the fact that the CD takes up the bottom left and centre thirds of the frompnt cover makes it eye catching.

College Magazine Evalutaion

COVER PAGE

What Went Well

  • The teasers on the page. They are in bold white and orange font so that they are easily seen.
  • The color scheme is consistent and that they reflect the college colors.
  • The image is related to the cover article as it gives tips for UCAS and the thumbs up reinforces that. The model is also looking directly at the audience thus creating a connection.
  • The cover line is across the page making it stand out from the rest of the teasers.
What could be improved
  • The image used as it was stretched.
  • The distribution of teasers as they are mainly on the left side of the page.
  • The masthead could have been spread across the page.
Audience Feedback

I like the way you have listened to the task brief of using a medium shot for your model and a plain background, as it is easy for the reader to focus on the model. Also using a colour theme of orange, white and blue gives your magazine consistency but its easy for the reader to identify the cover lines. One thing i would improve on is having the cover lines on both the left and right side of the model rather than across him.

CONTENTS PAGE

What Went Well
  • The colors from the front page are carried over onto the contents pages, giving the magazine a consistent house style.
  • The contents are organised in a column on the left side of the page in a bright orange box. This makes it stand out from the blue background and draws the reader to it.
  • The use of the editors letter makes the contents page realistic. It also gives an insight into a students life as it gives an opinion on current events such as UCAS applications and settling into college.
What could be improved
  • More images could have been used to advertise the feature articles. This would make the contents page more appealing as it would show the readers a visual representation of what the articles are about before reading them.
Audience Feedback

Again I think using a colour theme gives your magazine consistency but it allows the reader to focus on what is written. I think having an editors note makes your magazine look more realistic and shows you have put effort into your contents page. One thing I would improve on is having another picture because your contents doesn't look very appealing.

College Magazine Plan

Front Cover

Contents

Case Study 2 : Contents Page

The contents page consists of only one page.Q has a set house style. This is shown by using red, grey, and black in the contents as well as the front cover. All of the editorial items are listed in the contents page and sorted into different sections. The feature articles take up over half of the page. The page numbers for each feature article are in a colored circle to make them stand out. The reviews are in a text box to differentiate them from the regulars and feature articles. The regulars are listed at the bottom of the page. They do not take up space in the page to allow the feature articles to be easily seen.

Case Study 2 : Double Page Spread

The image on the right page is a close up shot of the model in low lighting. This gives an impression that the artist is mysterious. This impression is carried on from the front cover as he was behind a mask. There is also a pull quote at the bottom of the page. The pull quote is linked to the image as he has supposedly seen an alien. The yellow text with a black background also catches the readers eye when turning the page so that the reader reads the article.

The masthead is written in a similar font used in the text. It is also linked to the pull quote as it references the trope where the main character usually is awake or have trouble sleeping when there is an alien nearby. It is also in front of a yellow background so it is eye catching.

Case Study: Readership

These are the reader profiles for Q and Kerrang Magazines. They are both published by Bauer Media and have a similar audience. The main readers of the magazines seems to be males that are aged 15-24 which will be my proposed target audience for my magazine. The price points of the magazines are also a factor of the audience. Q is priced at about £4.00 RRP the audience tend to be upper working class/lower middle class. Kerrang is priced at £2.20 RRP so the audience are at working class.

Since Kerrang! is the the most popular magazine among teenagers I will use their statistics to base my audience on which is 55% male and 45% female.

Case Study 2 : Cover

The magazine "Q" is a rock/indie magazine. The front cover features a mast head in big and bold font. The masthead is white in a red square. This is to make the masthead stand out more. The image is a close up shot. The model in the image is in front of the mast head as they are more important. The model is also looking at the audience creating a connection while the masthead is still visible. The model appears to be wearing dark clothing whic could imply that he is a rock artist. The skyline is used to attract readers rather than advertise the other feature article. The skyline says "Free music for 60 day".They advertise the incentive so that people will buy the magazine.

The teasers on the bottom left of the magazine. This is the only part of the magazine that is visible on the shelf. The majority of the text is written in a light grey or white color. This is to make it stand out from the background. The main cover line is written in a larger font and uses red over grey as the secondary color. This is to attract the readers attention.

Case Study 1: Double Page Spread

On the left and most of the right side of the two pages there is an image of the band which the article is about, Green Day. There is also an image of an album cover on the right side of the page which is one of their albums. This is linked to the article because it talks about how it was the best rock album of the noughties.

The band in the image is wearing dark colored clothes against a dark colored background. This is to make the artists stand out more from the clothes they wear or the background which will cause fans of the band to read the article. One of the models is holding a box of popcorn which has a design similar to the album cover on the bottom right. The cinema setting and the album cover being a design for the popcorn box suggests that they are looking back on the success of their album.

The masthead at the bottom left third of the page uses a font similar to the one used in the album cover in the bottom right third of the page. This catches the readers eye and gains their interest. It also pays homage to the album by saying "the idiots" when referring to the band. This is a callback to the album which is the topic of the article, American Idiot. On the bottom center and right of the page, there is a red text box that shows who worked on the album. The red catches the readers eye so that they know who the article is about.

Case Study 1: Contents Page

The contents page consists of only one page. All of the editorial items are listed in the contents page and sorted into different sections. The editorial items are listed in the Feature Sections. There are seven sections in the contents. The seven sections are Feedback, News, Live Reviews, Posters, The Heroes Issue, Features, Albums, Gig Guide, and the Ultimate Rockstar test. The names of the sections are in black text boxes with yellow writing. This is to make it stand out from the white background of the page. The image on the top of the page is not related to the cover article but it features two popular bands that people may be interested in. The image at the center of the page is linked to one of the feature articles. The image of a musician crowd surfing is linked to one of the gig review articles. The images used in the contents page are not linked to the front cover.  The [age numbers that are on the images are used to make it stand out.On the right side, there is an editors letter which is common in this magazine.

Article Evaluation

Evaluation

Research Skills

When I was writing the article, I have been doing research on the advantages and disadvantages of file sharing and popular YouTube music artists.  I have used a variety of websites such as Esquire, Metro, and post discussing piracy on Reddit. I could have used more statistics in my work.

Writing Skills

My article uses a formal attitude  to discuss the increased use of the internet and how it is changing the music industry. I could have discussed more on the other ways of entering the music industry. I could have also used a larger font as it is hard to read.

InDesign Skills

I have learned a lot from my first experience in using this program. At first I had a basic Idea of what the tools were and how to structure my article. I also learned how to import text by using copy and paste and how to insert images. I am also able to export the article into JPEG or PDF format so that I can post it onto this blog.

Web Publishing Skills

I already had a blog on Blogger before taking AS Media so I already had an understanding of how the website works. I also have experience in using html so I could format the post in however I want. I found writing the blog posts of the progress of the article easy.

Conclusion and Targets for improvement

In conclusion, I found the planning of the article hard but found the writing and the blogposts easy to do. If I had comments on my blog then writing the evaluation of the article easier to do. In order to improve my article, I should have added more statistics and more information on Youtube Converters and proxies.

Draft 1 of Induction Task

Drafts for an article about the changing face of the music industry. It is produced using Adobe InDesign and the text was typed and transferred from word. I have to add more information about proxies and how online converters are still being used.
